Your Spanish vacation begins in Madrid, the country’s vibrant capital. Stroll through the lovely Parque del Retiro, a massive green space in the city center that was once only open to Spanish royalty.

  • Admire the artwork at the Museo del Prado, Spain’s answer to the Louvre. The museum houses some the world’s most-famous works of art, including Las Meninas by Velazquez and The Garden of Earthly Delights by Bosch.
  • Plaza Mayor: This public square has been a major part of Madrid since the 17th century. Today, you can snap pics of a bronze statue of King Philips III, or nosh on calamari sandwiches at one of the many outdoor cafes lining the square.

Head south to Granada, which is set amid breathtaking views of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Throughout the city, flamenco dance halls and bars dole out free tapas, making Granada a feast for the senses.

  • Must-see attraction: The Alhambra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and former Moorish palace with a distinct reddish facade.
  • Generalife gardens: This garden in the Alhambra dates back to the 14th century. Spanish royalty once lounged amid its cypress groves, jumping fountains, and exotic flowers.

Seville, an Andalusian city with a mix of Moorish architecture and elaborate cathedrals, is picturesque in all ways. While you’re there, make sure to try the gazpacho, one of the area’s most beloved dishes.

  • Must-see attraction: Giralda Tower was constructed in the 12th century as a mosque minaret. Later, it was repurposed as a bell tower for the Cathedral of Seville.
  • Plaza de Espana: The centerpiece of this red-brick plaza is a fountain surrounded by a canal and vibrantly tiled bridges.
